When you are looking for a family lawyer, what should you do to ensure that you get the best within the shortest time? The first thing that you want to do is ask around. Even before you look online or in the Yellow Pages, asking family and friends means that you are getting a direct recommendation for a lawyer whose services have been proven effective by someone you trust.
If they don’t have anyone they can recommend, you can then search online. Search for one who is close to you so they won’t have to travel to you – they charge for that.
Once you have identified a few, prepare some questions for them: how available are they, how much do they charge, what’s their experience with matters like yours, how many cases similar to yours have they handled in the last year and how many of these did they win?
All these questions are posed during an initial meeting for which you shouldn’t have to pay. If you are happy with what you have found, go ahead and sign a contract that states clearly your matter, when you commenced with the lawyer and how much you should pay them. Remember to always prepare your documents and questions in advance of meetings – you get to save money by not engaging the lawyer for many hours.
