A commercial lawyer, also known as a corporate lawyer or business lawyer handles all areas where business intersects with the law. They represent registered commercial entities. They can be retained in-house, which large companies like to do so that they are available to advice and do paperwork that arises from everyday business. These lawyers, who usually sit in the legal department of the company are paid like other employees but they can usually yield quite some power and they are even allowed to buy into the company.
Some commercial lawyers choose to represent smaller companies on contract basis – they are hired when they are required and then once the job is done, they are paid and they leave. These lawyers may ask for a retainer at the beginning of a job or they may ask for a flat fee.
A day in the world of a commercial lawyer can be a busy one – they represent their clients in major sales events, they organize takeovers and mergers, they take care of any contracts between their clients and other entities, they are there in case there are legal complaints from clients and so on. If the company is involved in a lawsuit of any kind, it is their job to argue for the company.
To find a commercial lawyer, you can look online but make sure to compare them; some of them charge quite extravagantly, so make sure you know what you are paying for; as with all other kinds of lawyers, some are better at their jobs than others.
